March 14, 2025
From Branislav Pekic in Rome

Portugal closed 2024 with 4.7 million pay-TV subscribers, a net addition of only 69,000 over the past year (+1.5 per cent), the slowest growth rate since 2006.
The penetration rate for the service among Portugal’s households reached 97.1 per cent, according to data from the National Communications Authority (Anacom).
Residential subscribers make up 88.5 per cent of the market, with 4.1 million subscribers (+1.3 per cent) compared to only 533,000 non-residential customers (+2.9 per cent).
Almost all pay-TV subscribers bundle the service with other offerings, while only 1.8 per cent purchased pay-TV as a standalone service in Q4 2024.
Fibre optic connections (FTTH) were the most popular access technology, accounting for 66.6 per cent of all subscribers, ahead of cable TV (25.5 per cent), satellite (6.5 per cent) and ADSL (1.4 per cent).
FTTH was also the only pay-TV technology that saw subscriber growth in the last quarter. Reaching 3.1 million subscribers, it added 171,000 new users (+5.8 per cent). Despite this growth, it represents the slowest annual increase for fibre since its introduction in 2007.
Meo dominated the pay-TV market with a 41.9 per cent share, ahead of Nos Group (36.0 per cent), Vodafone (19.4 per cent), and Digi/Nowo Group (2.6 per cent).
Meo and Vodafone increased their market share by 0.3 and 0.1 percentage points, respectively, while Nos Group’s share declined by 0.4 percentage points.
