AST SpaceMobile to launch BlueBird 2 in May
March 20, 2025
By Chris Forrester

AST SpaceMobile (AST) already has five of its BlueBird high-capacity broadband satellites in orbit, and has strong relationships with AT&T, Verizon and Vodafone each of which has stated that they want to start linking their existing cellular clients with AST. But AST needs far more satellites in orbit to provide a global service. The first of these ‘next generation’ BlueBird 2 satellites is now scheduled to launch on an Indian rocket in early May.
AST says it needs at least 25 satellites in orbit to provide a decent and usable coverage of, for example, North America or Europe. AST says its existing five craft plus 20 of the BlueBird 2 satellites to be launched during this year, will permit it to start earning meaningful revenues.
Mid-term the plan is for 45-to-60 satellites to be in orbit and thus achieve continuous broadband service to all its targeted geographical markets, including Japan.
Meanwhile, AST has managed to win a dismissal of a shareholder Class Action. The background is focused on a SPAC (Special Purpose Acquisition Company) deal where back on December 16th 2020, New Providence Acquisition (NPA), a special purpose acquisition company, announced that it had agreed to merge with AST & Science, with the surviving company to become AST SpaceMobile.
A Class Action started in December 2023 arguing that the SPAC move was unfair in regard to AST’s actual value, projected financial performance, and technological capabilities.
On March 10th 2025, the Delaware Court dismissed the Action, although an appeal can be mounted (an “Opportunity to Intervene”) and interested parties have until April 14th to make a move.
Analysts at Deutsche Bank has raised its target price on AST from €53 to €64 per share. The bank’s reports talks of AST’s progress in funding as well as agreements in place with terrestrial operators and the improvement in the rate at which it is building satellites.
